Mitsubishi i Production Begins for North American Market

The big day is finally here for Mitsubishi. With the North American release of the Mitsubishi i slated for the end of the month, the Japanese automaker has finally started production, finalizing some changes for the little EV as well.

What's different about the North American variant of the i? Some of the modifications are required for it to be sold in the U.S., while others were made in order to make the vehicle more appealing to American consumers. For instance, the North American version of the i is equipped with required safety features, such as advanced airbag and tire pressure monitoring systems, while the vehicle was also made a bit larger in order to appeal to U.S. consumers' sense of taste.

Considering the changes Mitsubishi made to the i for the North American market, and the newness of the EV segment, they're opting for a limited release. First, it will debut in western states like Hawaii, California, Oregon, and Washington, followed by a more widespread release throughout the U.S. and Canada in 2012.
